Electronically Giving In Church

Posted: Updated:

Some churches stick with traditions, but one in Fergus Falls is making a 'technical' change. Many in the congregation are now electronically giving.

First Lutheran Church is making it easier for young members to give.

"One of the things we feel strongly about here at First Lutheran is valuing the traditional, valuing the seniors and so on, but also being aware in our society as far as innovation so we're trying to do both." says Senior Pastor Saul Stensvaag.

Members don't have to worry about having a check or cash for offering, because now they can give with a quick scan on their smart phones.

"We wanted to make it as less intrusive as possible, we actually looked at some options where there's a giving kiosk, um we also thought of passing around an iPad around, but we really thought that a simple qr code in the bulletin people can do it if they are comfortable, if not they can choose not to do it and it's not in your face." says Kelsey Felstul a Church Council Member.

But not all are going to be using the new method, some are going to stick with the passing of the plate.

"That's great for younger people, I probably wont use it, but I think it will be a good thing for the church. Because younger people who are so tech savvy will be able to do that click and give and that's fabulous." says member Linda Mellon.

The church council just wanted to add one more way to give back.

"We have a lot of young families and so this kind of innovation is going to be right up their alley." Pastor Stensvaag says.

"I do it all the time and it's fun cuz I'm at the age where I have two little kids, and we don't have cash with us a lot, and they've actually been able to do it, they scan it with my phone and it really gets the kids involved as well." Kelsey says.

"It's so important for the giving to continue throughout the year, and people are busy they aren't here all the time, so it's awesome to have a way to give, and make that happen when your not able to be in church." Linda says.

First Lutheran Church has yet another method of giving. Besides a check, cash, or on your phone, members can set their bank account to automatically give a set amount each week.
