Otters Move Into New Home at Red River Zoo

Posted: Updated:

The otters at the Red River Zoo in Fargo finally have a new home. Three years in the making, the North American River Otter exhibit is now finished.

Rescued near the Sheyenne River about a year and a half ago, the otters have been living in a temporary home at the zoo not open to the public. After about four months of summer construction and $610,000, their new home is now finished.

The exhibit features an outdoor viewing area that overlooks a waterfall leading into a stream that flows into a large swimming area. An indoor component also allows guests to walk below the water level and feel like they're in an otters den.

The exhibit won't officially open to the public until September 16th, to allow the otters time to get acclimated with their new home. However, guests attending the zoo's annual end of summer party, "Zoolebration," will be allowed to get a sneak peak at the new otter house.

"Zoolebration," is Thursday night, September 5th, from 6-9 p.m. Tickets are still available at $50 per person and are only open to those 21 and older.
