Man Shares Story of Finding Boat in Deadly Lake of the Woods Accident

Posted: Updated:

UPDATE

We have new details about a deadly boat accident on Lake of the Woods, plus, an exclusive interview with the man, who found the boat and the bodies.

Preliminary autopsy results say 44-year-old Lonnie Norberg and 35-year-old Edward Wheeler, both of Champlin, Minnesota, died of carbon monoxide poisoning.  A third man, 43-year-old Christopher Klick of Crystal, Minnesota, remains hospitalized in satisfactory condition at Altru hospital in Grand Forks.

What should have been a fun weekend fishing trip for 3 friends turned tragic. At 11:30 Sunday night, folks along Birch Beach on the southside of Lake of the Woods heard the repeated blast of a boat horn.

Jim Newman found the disabled boat rocking against the shore with survivor, Christopher Klick, blowing the boat's horn.

Jim Newman, Lake of the Woods: "He said I got a couple bodies on board... he goes. My daughter was a nurse, so she ran, jumped in the water to get in and help out and she tried to work on the 2 of them. But they were gone and the other guy they brought him up and put him here and called the police."

The body of one of the deceased victims was found on the deck of the boat. The second victim was found in the cabin below.

Survivor, Christopher Klick wasn't sure what had happened.

Jim Newman: "He sounded like he was kind of confused.... I don't know he's going..."

The Sheriff says this carbon monoxide poisoning may have been caused by trying to fix a leaky exhaust pipe on the boat, with a pop can.

Sheriff Gary Fish, Lake of the Woods: "Basically, from what we can tell the exhaust was broken. There was a pop can shoved in the exhaust and with the right wind conditions it just all kind of adds up. Yep, yep, it's a freak thing."

A freak accident that forever changed the lives of 3 families.  The Lake of the Woods sheriff's department, along with the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension continue their investigation of the accident.
