Minot State University officials say a football player accused of beating an officer's head against a post while the officer was unconscious has been kicked off the team.

Jesse Ili went to court for the first time Tuesday on six charges, including attempted murder and assaulting an officer.

Police say he knocked one officer unconscious and left another hurt after police responded to a report of suspected drug use

Four other team members were arrested the same night for drug charges.

A university spokesman says they are suspended indefinitely.

Ili told Judge Richard Hagar Tuesday that he's a nonviolent person without a criminal past, and defense attorney Jessie Lang said Ili "fully intends to respond" to the charges.

Prosecutor Rozanna Larson said Ili is a danger to society.

Hagar set Ili's bail at $200,000. He's due back in court Oct. 11.

Ili played last season for Division I Fresno State University before transferring to Division II at Minot State.
