Weather Affects Summer Business Sales

Posted: Updated:

Many area businesses are welcoming the crowds of people that come with Labor Day weekend to try and end their season with higher sales. After a long winter and slow warm up for summer, some water rental businesses took a hit.

"Iith the ice coming off the lakes as late as it did this year, it makes it hard for a rental business like this." says Ben Magunson from SOL Surf Co. who rents and sells paddle boards.

Thinking back to May many lakes around our area were stillcovered in ice. After a late start to summer Ben didn't know if their paddle board rental business would do well this season.

"You know it was a crazy start to the summer, probably a little slower than all the local businesses wanted." he says.

So slow that many local businesses couldn't open until the middle of June. But now a new problem heated up, this August has been dry and the Otter Tail River levels are so low both K & K Tubing and Charlie's Tubing are closed for the rest of the season.

Some spots in the river are only anckle deep. Kayakers, canoers and intertubers would all have to get out of their equiptment and walk across the shallow areas. It's a water level that is too low for businesses to run.

But luckily for SOL (Stoked on Life) Surf Company they are on the lake, and have seen an upswing of renters towards the end of this summer.

"No plans, just decided sper of the moment to go do some paddle boarding," says Mark Lund who was wathching his three kids paddle away from shore, "We'd done some paddle boarding in Eden Prairie before so the kids wanted to try it again."

"You know the weather has kind of flipped here recently in the last couple weeks, and we're seeing a lot of rentals and sales making up for the early loss in the beginning of the summer." Ben says.

After knowing of the struggles of other water rental shops SOL Surf Co. is thankful people are coming to appreciate the remaining days of summer.

"We just want to see people enjoy the new sport, and get out on the water and have some fun." Ben says smiling.

Once again the Otter Tail river levels are too low. K & K Tubing and Charlie's Tubing are closed for the season. Both owners told Valley News Live they can only wish for a better season next year.
