Beware Back-to-School Germs

Posted: Updated:

Back to school is always exciting. But sharing classrooms also means sharing germs for kids

That's because when children are younger, they touch their faces, mouths and noses and then touch other kids which is how they pick up all kinds of germs, like colds, pink eye, and strep throat.

What to do to protect your little ones?

Avoid the water fountain. Have your child bring their own water bottles to school and ask them not to share with anyone.

Use hand sanitizer, especially before eating their lunch. Cafeteria trays are a hot bed of nasty germs, wash hands after lunch too.

Make sure your child gets enough rest to keep the immune system healthy. Sleep experts say 10 to 11 hours of sleep a night is the best.

Keep your kids active and well fed. A good nutritious breakfast, including vitamin C, can build energy and resistance to germs.

Winter is not far, so bundle them up. Studies show those who dress appropriately for the weather are less likely to catch colds later in the year.

These tips aren't just for kids, they can work for the entire family.
