School Adds Class Time To Make Up Missed Days

Posted: Updated:

A delayed start to the school year has upset the plans for some parents.  As the heat wave continues, five elementary schools in Fargo will remain closed this week, because they don't have air conditioning.

Clara Barton, Horace Mann, Lewis and Clark, McKinley Roosevelt elementary.

To make up the time, the Fargo Public School District has decided to extend the school day by half an hour.

"It's usually just me picking them up, and now they are both done at 3:15 and I'm not sure how I'm going to do that." says Brandi Desmarais who has a daughter at Lewis and Clark Elementary.

Her daughter goes to one of the five schools will be extending it's time starting September 30th through December 20th. Many parents say extending their kids time until 3:15 conflicts with rides and other kids that need to be picked up.

"Well we're required to put in a number of day's, since kids are already at school, add 30 more minutes on to that day of instruction, we just thought that'd be the best way to do it." says Fargo Schools Superintendent Dr. Jeff Schatz.

The District also says the school principals will decide how to divide the 30 minutes into the classes, but say it will be constructive learning time.

"The 30 minutes is quality education time, so they will come up with a good plan and it will be quality time for out students." Dr. Schatz says.

Extending the school day will also cause some overlap issues with busing. To address this the school district will likely be adding a few buses, but that this is something that's still in the works.
