The Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks held off the Amarillo Sox to clinch the 2013 American Association North Division title with an 11-7 victory Tuesday at Newman Outdoor Field.
Tim Alberts, Keith Brachold and Ronnie Bourquin each had three hits and played a role in big innings for Fargo-Moorhead (59-35)
Brachold and Alberts had RBI singles in a five-run first, while Bourquin hit a solo home run and Alberts hit a RBI double in the second to put the RedHawks out front, 7-1, through two innings.
Amarillo (50-44) battled back to cut the deficit to 7-6 with four runs in the sixth and a run in the seventh. Four hits in the sixth – including a two-run single by Chris Valencia – capped off the inning, while a K.C. Serna RBI double cut the margin to the closest it had been since the first.
The RedHawks put the game out of reach in the seventh with a Keith Brachold two-run double and a Tim Alberts two-run home run.
Alberts led the ‘Hawks with four RBIs, Brachold drove in three, while Bourquin and Buddy Sosnoskie each had one RBI. Jake Laber (9-5) picked up the win after pitching five-plus innings in the start. Nate Kilcrease picked up the 1 2/3-inning save in the contest that saw four RedHawks relievers in the game.
Amarillo outhit Fargo-Moorhead 13-11 in the ballgame. Serna led the Sox by going 3-for-5 with four RBIs and a run scored. Valencia and Joe Weik had three hits apiece and Kyle Nichols scored three times. Starter Joe Newby dropped to 6-5 in the loss. He gave up seven runs in his first two innings of work, but retired 12 straight batters in his next four innings pitched.
With the victory, the RedHawks won their 13th division title in club history and clinched a berth for the 2013 American Association playoffs. Fargo-Moorhead will play games one and two of the Semi-Finals at 7:02 p.m. at home – Wednesday, Sept.4, and Thursday, Sept.5, against an opponent to be determined.
