Heat-Related School Closures Continue Through the Week

Posted: Updated:

UPDATE: WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 28

Fargo Public Schools announced Wednesday morning they will be canceling class for the rest of the week for specific schools due to continued extreme heat. The school cancellation has been extended through Thursday and Friday for the following elementary schools:

  • Clara Barton Elementary
  •  Horace Mann Elementary
  • Lewis and Clark Elementary
  • McKinley Elementary
  • Roosevelt Elementary

All other schools in the district will be open as normal.

Because of the persistent weather pattern of high temperatures and excessive humidity without relief overnight, the schools without air conditioning are not able to cool down at night. Weather predictions show lower temperatures next week, so classes will resume after Labor Day on Tuesday, September 3.

In order to make up the lost days, the school day for these schools will be extended by 30 minutes each day from September 30 through December 20.  More detailed information ill be sent to families from the principals of each school.

Grand Forks Public Schools

Due to the high heat index forecast, Grand Forks public schools will dismiss school two hours early on Thursday and Friday this week.

Elementary schools will close at 1:00 p.m., middle schools at 1:30 p.m., and high schools at 12:55 p.m. Lunch will be served before students are dismissed. Afternoon head start and early childhood special education classes are canceled.

The district-wide early release of classes on August 29 and 30 was made due to the availability of air conditioning, continuity of time for families regarding child care and having a consistent transportation plan.

"It appears the weather pattern will continue throughout the week with relief coming this weekend," said superintendent Dr. Larry Nybladh. "At this time we intend on returning to a normal school schedule next week."

Middle and high school activities will continue as scheduled with extra precautions being made regarding additional rest and hydration in cooperation with athletic trainers. Elementary school intramurals are canceled August 29 and 30.

Wahpeton Public Schools

The Wahpeton Public School District is extending for the rest of the week its hot weather closure of one of its buildings.

Students at Central Elementary have been going home early all week, and will also be leaving at Noon Thursday and Friday because of the extreme weather. Buses will again run their regular routes for those students at that time.

UPDATE

In a rare move, several area schools closed on Monday because of the hot weather, and will remain that way for a few days. In mostly older schools with out air conditioning, empty hallways were the scene.

The district says most of the inside building temperatures are 85 degrees at the coolest. Superintendent Jeff Schatz says this is the first time they've had to close school for this amount of time because of heat.

"I look at this as kind of the reverse of the winter storm we have just such oppressive heat and humidity along with it there's no air moving with it no wind no way to really cool the buildings off so we just made the decision that we need to look at the safety of our students and make sure we keep them safe."

The following schools in the Fargo school district will be closed through Wednesday. Students will make these days up later in the year.

  • Clara Barton Elementary
  • Horace Mann Elementary
  • Lewis and Clark Elementary
  • McKinley Elementary
  • Roosevelt Elementary

Grand Forks public schools will be dismissed two hours early Tuesday and Wednesday. Elementary schools will close at 1:00 p.m.,middle schools at 1:30 p.m., and High schools at 12:55 p.m.

Some kids in Wahpeton are also going home early through Wednesday. The superintendent there says Central Elementary will be dismissing at noon on Tuesday and Wednesday. Busses will run their regular routes for those students at that time.

Valley City public schools district superintendent canceled the opening day of school set for Wednesday. School is scheduled for Thursday and Friday, weather permitting, but will could be dismissed early on those days.

St. John's Academy in Jamestown will be dismissing at 1:00 p.m. every day for the rest of the week.
