Jamestown Transition House Prepares Students to be Independent

Posted: Updated:

This week, as students across our region headed back to school this week, we have a look at some of the amazing work being done by teachers and students in Jamestown.

Jerome Dunn, Student: "Monday we go to Speech. Thursday we go to church and Friday we go grocery shopping.

It's called, the Transition House. This year, 7 special needs students, who already have all their high school credits, will begin to learn the stuff of everyday life.

Student: "No, not in there. Not in there either."

That means learning how to shop for groceries, put them away, cook and clean.

Amy Bennett, Teacher: "We really just want each student to work to the highest potential they can. We want them to be as independent as they can. Some of our students end up in group homes, some of them with their families and some live in their own apartments."

Teacher: "Which one is the same? Perfect."

In the past, Travis Witt of Lamoure hasn't open to a lot of change. His mother is hoping this program will make him more independent.

Jean Witt, Mother of Student: "Yes, definitely. His future is a big question mark right now as to how independent can we get him. Are we looking at a group home or independent living?"

Amy Bennett, Teacher: "Rather than sit and learn how to count the money, we'll go to the store and spend the money. So, they're working with real change. We are out in the Community a lot."

This year, they'll work at local businesses, attend recreational events... basically learning the lessons of everyday life.

Student: "Ladies first..."

The Transition Program is funded by the Jamestown School District. It acts as a bridge for young
people, who are not eligible for government assisted programs, until they're 21-years old.
