Dayton, Lawmakers Stretch for Special Session Deal

Posted: Updated:

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) - Governor Mark Dayton and top lawmakers are making another attempt to find agreement on a storm-relief special session. If an agenda is finalized Wednesday, the quick session would September 9.

The Democratic and Republican leaders say delivering assistance to 18 affected counties is on the priority, but they differ on what else should be part of the mix. Democrats, including Dayton, say they will seek to exempt farm machinery repairs from a new business equipment sales tax. That comes with a $28 million cost.

Republicans hope to eliminate other newly enacted taxes. Dayton says he's willing to do that only if adequate and acceptable replacement money is found so a hole won't open in the new budget.

The storm package would provide a state match for federal disaster assistance.
