Sen. Heitkamp talks housing issues with Fargo City Leaders

Posted: Updated:

The amount of homes being built in the state of North Dakota increases every day.
But at a panel discussion with Fargo city leaders , Senator Heidi Heitkamp says it's still not enough.

"Our biggest problem is affordable housing," says Senator Heitkamp.

Heitkamp believes finding homes under $200,000 is hard to do.

"What we're seeing is that we're not being able to buy a lot for less than $80,000. I'd love to see single family homes in the $160,000- $200,000 range, how do you do that when the lot is $80,000," says Sen. Heitkamp.

While some people may think the housing shortage is taking place just in western North Dakota, a study form the Homeless Coalition shows that almost every shelter in the state is at full capacity each and every day.

Senator Heitkamp believes that to fully address the housing crisis, we also need to fix our broken housing finance system.
