Counterfeit Money Found in Barnesville

Posted: Updated:

An alert store clerk at the Tesoro station in Barnesville tipped-off authorities that some people in a white van with Arizona plates took off after trying to pass what appeared to be counterfeit money.

Clay County Sheriff's Lt. Steve Landsem says an employee checked the $20.00 bills with a pen and discovered they may be counterfeit. After seeing the employee check the bills, the individuals left the store.

A State Trooper spotted the vehicle on I-94 and pulled it over. Landsem says officers matched the serial numbers to other bills inside the vehicle. He says they also found $3,700 in counterfeit bills mixed in with $2,100 in real money, as well as printing supplies believed used to make the money.

One suspect is from California. The other two don't have permanent addresses.  The Secret Service is trying to figure out if the three have been traveling the country spreading the bogus bills.
