Hail storm destroys crops near Colfax

Posted: Updated:

Thousands of acres of crops are destroyed after mother nature rips through parts of south eastern North Dakota Tuesday.

These pictures tell a small part of the story when it comes to the amount of damage from Tuesday night's hail storm.

"This is all broken off," says Carrol Duerr, manager of the Colfax Farmer's Elevator.

Duerr says in a matter of minutes crops along a three mile stretch just west of town were destroyed.

"There's nothing left. There's a good chance it's 100 percent gone," says Duerr.

From the soy beans to corn.

"There's thousands of acres completely stripped," says Duerr.

Jeff Olson and his family have farmed land out here for years but he calls himself lucky compared to some of the damage farmers suffered.

"I'd say we had about a 20 percent crop loss," says Olson.

For Anne Nelson, her family didn't suffer any crop damage but she can't say the same for her house.

"We have to take all the siding off and redo the siding," says Nelson.

She says with insurance this will be an easy fix and just hopes farmers will be able to say the same.

"They should have insurance and we will see with a an assessment just to see how much damage was done."
