Moorhead Garage Destroyed in Afternoon Fire

Posted: Updated:

Updated Story 10:00pm

Investigators still haven't said what the cause of Sunday afternoons garage fire and explosions was, but neighbors are being thanked for their quick action.

First on the scene was Bill Wilke who lives a few homes down from where the fire was. He and his family were coming home when they noticed flames coming out of the garage.

"You could see the flames on the front left side of the garage, the garage door was open and the flames were maybe 5, 6 feet high and they were just starting to touch the top of the garage door." Wilke says.

He and another neighbor started running towards the home thinking they could extinguish the flames themselves, but that's when they started seeing and hearing the explosions.

"There was large explosions, very big explosions and so I stopped running, some young man from the back of the house and asked if anyone was hurt, I said I don't know and then there continued to be explosions and then fireworks started." Wilke says.

No one was home at the time. Fire crews say if anyone ever sees any smoke or flames to always call 911 right away like the neighbors did Sunday afternoon.

Original Story

Moorhead Fire responded to a call Sunday afternoon of a house fire on the 1700 block of 33rd Street South in Moorhead. Homeowners were not home at the time, but neighbors say they heard two loud explosions coming from inside the garage then a series of smaller explosions that sounded like fireworks. Investigators are looking into the cause of the fire. The garage is destroyed and there is some damage to the siding of a neighboring house. But, thanks to neighbors' quick reaction times, Moorhead Fire was able to arrive in time to save the rest of the home.
