A Garden That's Growing A Home

Posted: Updated:

A garden here in Fargo is not only growing fresh produce, but it's being used as a teaching tool. The weeding and picking is really working towards a better future for those with special needs.

"Basically we're here to plant a garden, get into the community and show what we do." says Lee Swanson.

A 100 by 100 square foot garden is being cared for by Farm In The Dell of the Red River Valley, a group that hopes to build a farm and home in Moorhead.

"It's a farm for people with disabilities to live and work, and there's nothing like that in Minnesota or in our area so we wanted to start that." says Karen Urlacher.

She gardens with her son Kevin and husband Glenn. The garden is now booming after weeks of planting, weeding and watering.

"Now they are to the fun part they are harvesting and selling it." Karen laughs.

They are selling the produce to teach them how to earn money for their work. They say it takes a lot of dedication for them to be out here everyday picking, but that also teaches them responsibility.

"We want theses kids with disabilities to be able to do meaningful work and to give back to the community." Karen says.

"We're trying to teach her we want to give to the community, this is a community garden that we're working in, it's not necessarily our garden." Gary Streich says who comes almost everyday with his daughter.

It's a place for them to learn and grow in the community, that they will soon do in their own home.

Farm In The Dell of the Red River Valley is looking at expanding, by looking for some land about 10-20 acres to use. They hope to be building the farm in a couple years.
