New City Hall Will Stay at Current Location

Posted: Updated:

UPDATE

The City of Fargo has decided the best spot for its new city hall is the building's current location. The selection committee made the decision at a meeting Thursday, September 19.

City Commission members said the flexibility of the four block area, and the fact that the city already owns that land made it the best choice to build on.

Fargo city commissioner Mike Williams says now that the decision has been made, the focus will shift on adding flood protection to that area. The commission will decide whether to sign off on the recommendation during it's next meeting.

UPDATE

The search committee has narrowed the sites for a new Fargo city hall to five from a list of 18. The options include:

  •  Re-purposing the original civic center area which encompasses a 4 square block around the current city hall.
  • The old Pierce Printing building and old Taco Bell properties on 1st Avenue North
  • The Romantix block across from the mat bus depot
  • The Mid-America Steel building
  • The U.S. Bank Plaza on Broadway

 ORIGINAL STORY

A committee has their work cut out for them after coming out of yesterday's meeting with over two dozen sites that could host the new Fargo City Hall.

The Site Selection Committee has until next month to cut the list down of preferred sites, and hopes to have a recommended site ready by October.

The options presented to the committee:

-Civic Center area

-Professional Building

-Park East/Gateway Shopping Center/High Rise area

-US Bank

-Bookstore across the street from the GTC on NP Avenue

-Mid-America Steel

-Woodrow Wilson

-Pierce Printing

-Nestor

-South of Broadway at the foot of the hill by Island Park

-West of the jail

-The old Shakey's building

-K-Mart on South University

-Sunmart at 7th Avenue and North University

-Union Storage

-Current YMCA site on 4th Street South

-4th Avenue and 10th Street North

-Old Library site (2nd Avenue and Roberts Street N.)

-Border States Electric on 1st Avenue and 25th Street North

Architect Richard Moorhead will now come up with an analysis of each site for presentation to the committee in two weeks.

The goal is to pick the site by early October. Fargo City Hall is decades old , cramped and outdated. City leaders say it would cost millions to fix.
