Battle of the Badges Blood Drive Hoping to Break 1000 Donors

Posted: Updated:

For the seventh year in a row United Blood Services has teamed up with local fire and police to create the largest blood drive in the State of North Dakota.

Festivities kicked off yesterday at West Acres in South Fargo, with the annual tug of war won by team law for the first time in the events seven year history. Team law is also off to an 11 donation lead after day one, brining in 80 donations yesterday compared to 69 brought in by team fire.

United Blood Services says they can process 300 people a day through the on site donation center, in hopes of breaking 1000 donations at the end of the week. United Blood Services serves 93 hospitals in the region needing 500 donations a day to keep their shelves and hospitals fully stocked.

"Summer is typically a slower season for blood donations, so this partnership between the FOP, IAFF, blood donors, and countless volunteers has helped us maintain a stronger blood supply during the summer," said Rhonda Ellefson, donor recruitment manager, United Blood Services.  "We hope more people will understand the ongoing need for blood and the impact they have on others when they give."

Donating is easy and free, donors can show up to the food court entrance at West Acres (3902 13th Ave. S. in Fargo) and need to be at least 16 years of age, weigh at least 110 pounds, be in good health and complete a day of health questionnaire.

Since 2007 over 4,500 people have donated blood at Battle of the Badges and over 1,400 of those were first time donors.

Battle of the Badges runs through Friday the 26th and is open from 11am - 7pm. Team Law has won the event two years, including last and Team Fire holds four wins.
