UPDATE: Camp Officials Speak out About Alleged Child Sex Crimes

Posted: Updated:

Valley News Live has uncovered disturbing new details about what victims say happened to them at a lakes country church camp. A Mille Lacs County Sheriff's Deputy is being held in the Otter Tail County jail facing eight charges of molesting four minors.

Aaron Heuer isn't just a Sheriff's Deputy, for as long as he's worn his badge he's also worked or volunteered at Lutheran Island Camp in Henning, Minnesota. He spent the past six years with the summer camp.

Valley News Team's Eric Crest did some digging and found details of what Heuer is accused of doing.  We want to warn you, some of what you read may be disturbing.

The criminal complaint against Deputy Heuer details the stories of four boys ages 8 to 13. The accusations started at Lutheran Island Camp in June of 2013 where he worked as a fishing guide.

"He volunteered for a two week period in June of this year as a fishing guide with one of our fishing camps June 9th to the 21st," explains Schan Sorkness with Lutheran Island Camp. "He has volunteered for the past few years."

The report says he would take the boys out on the boats. Only two or three children were allowed in the boat during fishing trips at a time.

It was during those fishing trips, that lasted anywhere from three to four days, the criminal complaint states four children say they were told to perform oral sex on Heuer. If they didn't, the report says the boys were told they would be thrown from the boat.

Sorkness explains his surprise when he found out about the allegations. "We were shocked and appalled to learn of these charges just like anyone. It's something we had no information or incline of."

Heuer has been taking kids out fishing at the summer camp in Henning for the past three years. Typically, Heuer only volunteered for a few weeks a summer. Some of the minors say the sheriff's deputy also molested them and some friends in Aitkin County on a different fishing trip this summer.

"Our concern obviously is with our campers and with the families and all those folks we're associated with," explains Sorkness.  "We're doing our part to make sure the info has got out to people who need to be aware of this."

In addition to taking kids out on fishing trips, Heuer has also worked here as a counselor and part of a grounds maintenance crew for the past 6 years.

"It's truly just heart-crushing to think children were hurt by a person in a trusted position like a deputy."

Each of the eight charges Heuer is facing carries a maximum sentence of 25 to 30 years in jail. Heuer's first court appearance will be on August 5 at the Otter Tail County courthouse.

Officers have arrested a Mille Lacs County Sheriff's Deputy on charges of having sexual contact with children in Otter Tail and Aitkin Counties.

29-year-old Aaron Heuer of Isle, Minnesota is accused of inappropriately touching four boys, and telling them to have sexual contact with him at Lutheran Island Camp in Henning in June.

Heuer was a volunteer fishing guide at the time.

The boys are between the ages of 8 and 10.

Investigators are looking into more incidents they believe happened with two of the victims on a separate fishing trip.

Heuer is on paid administrative leave and is being held in the Otter Tail County Jail.
