Family Speaks Out After Fargo Teen Is Shot

Posted: Updated:

Fargo Police are investigating a shooting that left a 15-year old boy hurt. Police say the shooting happened in a park near 20th Street and 5th Avenue South just before 8:00 Monday night.

The teen was shot in the arm and hospitalized, but was released later on Tuesday. While police continue to investigate the shooting, as of Tuesday evening, they are calling the incident accidental.

Valley New's Team's Jennifer Titus spoke to the family of the 15-year-old victim. They tell us it was not an accident, and they think the 15-year-old was the victim of a drive-by shooting.

The parents of the teen say a lot of bad things have been happening in Jefferson Park lately, and something needs to be done to make the area safer.

Beth Erickson likes that her backyard is a park, it is a place she can bring her godson, but as of recently she says she only brings him during the day.

"It's sketchy, it's dark," Erickson explains.

She says she feels the park is not the safest, but was still surprised when she heard about the shooting.

"A cop came and talked to me last night and I was like 'what in my backyard?'"

"There is a lot of gang activity out here."

Carlisha Smith also says bad things happen in the area just east of 25th Street South in Fargo, but usually not as serious as this.

"You don't think it would happen here," Smith says.

According to Fargo Police, Jefferson west park isn't under their radar and Lt. Joel Vettel explains why.

"It's very busy, but do we consider it any different then any where else? No."

Beth Erickson hopes things can get safer before they start to get even worse, and that safety would come with police patrols.

"Better if someone was around patrolling it here."

Police say they tried to contact the 15-year-old victim to ask him more questions about what happened Monday night, but they have not had any luck.  Police are also looking for any witnesses, if you have information, you are asked to call Fargo Police.
