Gay Couples Applying for Marriage Licenses in Clay County

Posted: Updated:

A gay couple from Fargo calls this day a dream come true after spending Wednesday morning applying for a marriage license.

"I think it's time to get a new photo," says Lenny Tweeden.

Tweeden hopes to soon replace this photo with a wedding picture of him and his fiancee of 28 years.

"I didn't think it would happen in my lifetime," says Tweeden.

Lenny has lived with his partner for years. He never thought there'd be a day when he'd be able to call him his husband.

"We're getting married August 1st," says Tweeden.

And Wednesday, the couple applied for their marriage license.

"It's overwhelming. I never thought it would happen," says Tweeden.

And although applying for one of these at the Clay County courthouse is a dream come true for a gay couple as of 2:30, they only had 7 applications.

But for Lenny, he's just happy that Minnesota is making the right step forward in legalizing gay marriage and says it's time north Dakota gets going in the same direction.

"That's why I met with my attorney today to see what benefits we are entitled to in North Dakota and if we find out that there are benefits were not entitled to then ACLU may come in and go after North Dakota law," says Tweeden.

Tweeden is not the only one planning on marrying August 1 at midnight, Clay County courthouse staff are expecting to have quite a few couples say "I do."
