Restaurant Report Card

It is Tuesday. That means it is time for this week's restaurant report card. This week we went into Moorhead to check the latest health inspection reports to find out how safe the food you are eating there is.

There are two restaurants in particular that ended up with several violations.

We begin this week's report at Juano's on Main Avenue in Moorhead. There were pages of violations that showed up.

Staff operating the restaurant had not been properly trained in food safety.

Food that is brought from the Fargo location was not reheated to a proper temperature before going into hot holding.

Two dishwashers did not have any sanitizer.

Sewer lines above the food storage and prep area were not covered.

The floor in the food prep area did not meet code because it was so badly damaged, and several areas needed cleaning.

We spoke with the owner, who clarified a few things.

He said the owners of the building added apartments above the restaurant, after it opened, so there was nothing he could do about the sewer lines. He says those owners will be covering the lines and will be fixing the badly damaged floor.

He added that a properly trained person is now present at all times, everything is cleaned and the dishwashers have also been repaired.

Our last stop was at Perkins right on Highway 10.

Here containers in the walk-in cooler and freezer were not properly covered. The walk-in cooler condenser unit was dripping on the floor and packages.

The walk-in freezer was icing up, so food was only partially frozen.

The hot warmer where food sits needed cleaning, so did the walls and floor around the dishwasher and ceiling vents.

The cleaning needed to be done within ten days.

We were unable to contact a Perkins corporate representative to talk about these issues.

Our weekly restaurant report card also includes notoriety for an eatery that has passed its health inspection.

This week's clean plate award goes to Arby's in Moorhead. On its most recent inspection the restaurant had no violations. Staff there say it is a lot of hard work and training, but putting the customers first is what it is all about.

General Manager Dan Hamernik says, "We are the regional training center for the managers for Fargo-Moorhead, Grand Forks. We also do some stores out in Bismarck and Minot. That means we have to do almost perfect on food quality, customer experience and food safety."

A couple months ago, the Arby's on 25th Street in Fargo received the clean plate award.
