Fargo Church Burglarized, Vandalized

Posted: Updated:

A Fargo church is left cleaning up a mess after burglars ransacked the place in an apparent search for cash from Sunday collections. It happened at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic church in South Fargo.

"There were two large cabinets here."

This is not the way Father Raymond Courtright was planning on spending his Monday morning.

"I'm guessing they tried to use this to get in the safe here," says Fr. Courtright.

Just before Monday morning mass, workers at the church noticed this mess inside the parish office.

" I got a call and someone said safe was broken into and this office was broken into," says Fr. Courtright.

They tore cabinets off the wall, stole a computer monitor and tried to get into this safe.

"It's funny how they went about it. They broke off the handles and now no one can get into it," says Fr.. Courtright.

Fr.. Courtright believes this window was broken by this fire extinguisher and that's how the person or persons got into the parish office.

"We have a couple broken windows," says Fr. Courtright.

But Father Courtright says even after all of this damage, no cash was ever taken, something he believes they were looking for in the first place.

"You get more going into the church and asking for us to help you with your payments," says Fr. Courtright.

This is not the first time the church has been broken into but Father Courtright says this is the most damage they have ever seen. The church believes it will cost a couple thousand dollars to fix the damage.

Police are still trying to determine how the burglars got into the church. Now, the church will meet and see if surveillance cameras or even an alarm system would be something they add here in the future.
