Group looks to raise $1 million for Detroit Mountain

Posted: Updated:

People in Detroit Lakes are hoping to bring Detroit Mountain back to life, and better than ever before. One group has spent years doing feasibility studies and holding fundraisers.

Since 2002, Detroit Mountain has turned into overgrown shrubs and abandoned lifts.

But those with the Detroit Mountain Recreation Area are looking to do a make over.

"This would be the lift," says Mark Fritz with the DMRA, Inc.

Mark Fritz of DRMA, Inc., has worked to bring Detroit Mountain back and says soon this will be a four-season recreational area.

"Picture trails and scenic spots for mountain biking and skiing," says Fritz.

So just how long is it going to take? With help from the community they say they could begin construction by this fall.

"We have $1 million dollars left to raise," says Fritz.

The overall project will cost $7 million, and with grants and more than $5 million already raised, they are positive they can reach their goal.

"We need financial support from the entire community to see this become a reality," says Fritz.

Because this isn't just a mountain for some to enjoy; they believe it will have a little something for everyone

"Detroit Mountain is a first class mountain that everybody will be proud of," says Fritz.
