Keep Holiday Fun Safe

Posted: Updated:

A long 4th of July weekend gives us more time to pack in the fun. Lakes Country has seen the most activity with people boating, tubing and swimming to celebrate. But there are precautions to be taken while you're out enjoying the holiday.

"We usually put people on theses busy weekends, just anticipating, you know you want to make sure we have the resources out there to handle what could happen." says Clay County Sheriff Bill Bergquist. "Tragedy could happen very quick." he adds.

The holiday can bring many incidents from fireworks, tubing and boating accidents, that's why lifeguards say, no matter if you're at the pool or lake, to be cautious.

"Wear life jackets when you're in the deep water, if you're tubing then you want to wear life jackets, that type of stuff." Josh Zetocha, "If you can see the shallow water, obviously don't want to dive in there. It's better if there's a parent in the water with you, they can get there much faster than a life guard can."

Thankfully this fourth only had a few incidents, but sheriffs want to be sure the rest of the summer stays safe.

"The biggest thing is you do get more people out on the lake and you have to be watching out for each other." Sheriff Bergquist says.

So keep an eye out on others so everyone can have a fun, safe weekend.

"Always be with friends or parents, whoever it is that can watch you as well as you watch them, and just use common sense." Josh adds.
