F-M Area Clears Out, Lakes Fill Up

Posted: Updated:

It's a weekend for celebration, but it might not look like it around the F-M area.

With a long weekend and hot forecast, most businesses are closing down early due to lack of customers.

Valley News Team's Hope Hanselman went to find out where everyone's headed and who's getting the benefit from the holiday weekend.

"Recently I have been walking through downtown a lot, so I noticed that this weekend is really empty compared to many other weekends," Seleria Alengery, of Fargo, said.

The sun is out. The week is over. And business in Downtown Fargo isn't quite booming.

"I don't see people around many shops are closed."

The typical summer gathering warming up along these streets have taken a hiatus of their own.

"Yesterday was the Fourth of July, and then I thought the day after would be like a big thing, but that's not happening," Alengery said.

Most businesses Downtown closed after the fireworks, because most customers had already packed up to watch the shows away from the city.

"Actually, my friends, they went to Detroit Lakes 'cause they thought the weather was nice, they can swim a little bit and gather together," Alengery said.

Warm sand. Cool water. And crowds by the hundreds.

Locals in Detroit Lakes say the town grows to twice its size during the holiday weekend.

"A couple hundred more, especially on the main strip it gets really busy," Luke Egeebraaten, of Detroit Lakes, said.

Some businesses were too busy to even get away to talk with us.

Now, the city is empty. The weekend is here. And the lakes are booming with traffic.
