Healthier Me: Flip Flop Foot Pain

Posted: Updated:

Summertime's favorite footwear has become a source of pain for a lot of people.

Sanford Health's physical therapists say they often see a spike in patients when the weather warms up and people start wearing flip flops more often.

Therapists say the lack of support can cause tendonitis, ankle sprains, low back pain, heel pain and even broken bones.

Think about how your toes have to squeeze every step to keep the flip flop in place. Flips flops also tend to cause a lot of trips... and falls. If you don't flex to keep the sandal up -- it will catch and trip you up.

Mark Brenner is a physical therapy manager at Sanford Health. He says flip flops should be worn for only short periods of time. He says the longer you wear them -- the more likely you are to see problems.

If you insist on wearing flips flops, the experts recommend:

(1) Choose ones made with firmer materials that have stiff soles and bend only a little.

(2) Wear your flip flops in moderation.

(3) Switch your flip flops for a sport sandal that has more support for your arch and that has a strap around the heel to take pressure off of your forefoot.

(4) To avoid injuries such as sprained ankles or falls, avoid running or jumping while wearing your flip flops.
