ND Inmate Captured After Attempted Escape

Posted: Updated:

RUGBY, N.D. (AP) - Authorities say a federal prisoner is back in custody after escaping from a Rugby jail.

34-year-old Wesley E. Brown III escaped around 3:30 p.m. Friday, by climbing a fence around the recreation yard at the Heart of America Correctional and Treatment Center.

Chief Deputy U.S. Marshal Dan Orr says Brown was seen running through fields southeast of Rugby not long after he escaped, but muddy conditions made it difficult for officers to close in on him.

Brown wandered into Gun Lake before he surrendered to officers around 6:30 p.m., about four miles south of Rugby.

Brown has been at the center since his April arrest on a federal charge of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
