Crookston Moose Update: Mischief in the Country

Posted: Updated:

Here's an update on a story we brought you earlier this spring about a moose that had been hanging around Crookston.

The moose has now been spared from a possible death penalty. But, it's still getting into trouble out in the country.

The yearling moose spent most of the winter hanging around Crookston. At one point, officials had to consider shooting it, because she was getting in folk's backyards and too close to people.  It's saving grace came after it wrecked a  fence on the edge of town last month and Ross Hier  of the DNR chased it out of town with a 4-wheeler.

Ross Hier, DNR: "That Friday evening, the 10th of May we were able to move her east again, almost a full mile."

Now, the moose has been hanging around the Red Lake River 5-miles east of town. But, it's still getting into a bit trouble in the backyards of folks who live out here.

Marilyn Flateland's daughter was forced to take refuge on her trampoline, after the moose showed up right behind her, while she was gardening.

Marilyn Flateland: "All of a sudden she could hear something behind her and she looked up and there was a moose. So, she jumped on the trampoline and stood there and called me on her cell phone and said, "Mom there's a moose out here."

Reporter: "What happened? Did the moose just walk away?"

Flateland: "Yep, he just finally left."

They've snapped all kinds of photos of it in their backyard this week. Steve Flateland says he's  O.K.'d with it hanging around their property.

Steve Flateland: "Yeah, don't bother me any."

So, while the moose now appears to have a place to live, it is right by a highway. So far, it's been savvy about crossing roads.

Ross Hier, DNR: "They and vehicles don't get along too well. So, she seems to be pretty good about being near major roads, lets hope that continues."
