A Step Closer to Bringing Detroit Mountain Back to Life

Posted: Updated:

Picture-perfect memories of what was once a skiing destination for families in the region sits closed since 2004. Detroit Mountain now a thing of the past.

"My kids learned to ski there," says Mark Fritz.

But Fritz and other members of the non profit organization Detroit Mountain Recreation Area are working to rejuvenate the property.

"We recently acquired the property," says Fritz.

Now that it's theirs, they need the communities help to see it come alive.

"We need the rest of it to fall into place," says Fritz.

To get this mountain up and running again, some work needs to get done. They need to build a new lodge get a new ski lift and some new equipment.

"There are still a lot of ways to go," says Fritz.

But the organization believes this hidden gem will soon be a year-round destination.

"There will be mountain biking, skiing, tubing. We're excited about that," says Fritz.

The group will be kicking off a general campaign fundraiser soon which will outline the blue prints of what the mountain will hopefully look like.

They hope to have Detroit mountain open by winter of 2014.
