Not an Ideal Start to Mosquito Season

Posted: Updated:

With our continued wet and rainy conditions the start to our mosquito fight will make for "a challenging year," says Ben Prather, with Cass County Vector Control.

"Definitely kind of tilts the balance out of our favor for the short term and more than likely is going to create a few challenging nights over the next six or so weeks."

All though it's not an ideal start to the mosquito season, Prather says his team is prepared and ready for the fight and will be out in full force dropping larvicide tablets and spraying ditches, ponds and areas where they typically see problems.

"Generally the best practice is to follow through that and every time it rains we just continue to go through those sites and hammer down."

In addition property owners can purchase their own larvicide tablets to place in bird baths, flower pots, or areas of standing water on their property.

Prather says if you do notice a mosquito problem and have issues with biting you can move to an adulticide insecticide.

Various fogs and spray insecticides on the market can kill adult mosquitos in the air and may be useful to spray the night before a BBQ or gathering if you have a persistent mosquito problem.

Maintaining your yard, keeping your grass cut and draining any standing water on your property can add to keeping mosquito's away from your home.

Prather says, just because this start isn't ideal, doesn't mean there's any reason to panic.

"Nothing that we're gonna mark in the history books and say wow look at 2013 as the worst year ever that's yet to be seen, it could be a challenging year but we hope to get on top of them soon."
