Crystal, N.D., Residents in Major Flood Fight Monday Night

Posted: Updated:

Resident in the northeastern North Dakota town of Crystal have a major flood battle on their hands Monday night.

The 138 residents of that town, along with folks from neighboring towns have been battling high water all day, after as much as 7-inches of rain fell in that area.

Main Street of Crystal, North Dakota is flooded, along with many other parts of town.  Residents say water in some areas is 4 to 5 feet deep.

A few homes have been evacuated, many others have water in them.

Larry McCollum, Mayor: "Right now there's probably 25 to 30 homes that are being effected."

Reporter: "Water in the basement?"

McCollum: "Water in the basement and there's probably a couple that might have water higher."

What they have is a 3-fold problem. The northern branch of the nearby Park River has overflowed, as has the Cart Creek, which runs near town. Plus, there are miles and miles of water running across country… heading for Crystal.

The town is not protected by any kind of dike system, so crews had to sandbag individual homes and businesses as fast as they could.

Here at this grain elevator warehouse, crews were sandbagging to try and stay ahead of what looked like an ocean of water.

Over at the school, sandbags and pumps kept water out of classrooms, but some water did make its way inside the building.

Jackson Hall, Flood Fighter: "The locker rooms, which are below ground have water up to the first step and the boiler room got it. But we're pumping and keeping up."

Les Puppe, Flood Fighter: "It's cutting roads from here to Mountain. It's cross country flooding. I've never seen anything like it."

Folks in Crystal are now just hoping the flood water doesn't get any higher, before it gets out of town.
