Investigators are trying to identify a man who was hit by a train near West Fargo Tuesday afternoon. The crash happened just before 2:00 P.M. On 38th Street Northwest, about half a mile north of Interstate 94, and about a mile west of West Fargo. The Cass County Sheriff's Office says the man was heading south bound in his pick-up when he was hit by the train and was pronounced dead on the scene.

A windy afternoon kept this train at a slower pace than normal as it left West Fargo, going about 40-45 miles per hour in a 55 mile per hour zone. But it still wasn't able to stop in time for a pick up.

Detective Joel Stading with the Cass County Sheriff's Office says, "Emergency personnel arrived on the scene and found one victim with the vehicle."

The train hit the pick up on the driver side door, and continued to push the it about 1000 feet from the crossing.

Detective Stading says, "Still gathering the information to make sure everything was done properly."

During the investigation, the crossing arms were down and the hazard lights were flashing, indicating they may have been working at the time of the crash.

Detective Stading says, "Engineers and conductors, still getting their statements to determine what exactly happened."

As the investigation of the scene wrapped up, crews checked the safety features of the crossing and watched the remains of the pick up be hauled away.

The man's body has been sent to Bismarck for an autopsy Wednesday morning. His name will be released once family has been notified.
