Fargo Marathon Countdown: It's Not Too Late to Sign Up For 5K

Posted: Updated:

Need a little motivation to get yourself up and moving? Why not sign up for the Fargo Marathon's 5K?  The 5K is Friday, May 17 and the weather is finally cooperating for those wanting to get outside and exercise.

It's too late for most people to run the half or full marathon, but the 5K is just three miles.  You can run or walk it and the fun atmosphere surrounding marathon weekend might be just the motivation you need to lace up your shoes.

Plus, here's another plus: A portion of every entry in the 5K goes toward buying shoes for kids in need in our community.

The Fargo Marathon director says signing up for the 5K is the perfect way to get yourself started in a running routine.

"The only way you get into running is to crawl, walk and then run, explains Mark Knutson. "So, you have to start somewhere. We encourage people to give the 5k a shot."

If you are new to running, here are some tips to get you started.

  1. Most important are running shoes.
  2. You'll also want to get some athletic socks, ideally ones that are made of a wicking type fabric.
  3. Next concern is what you will wear. Make sure it is comfortable and can wick away moisture to keep you cool.
  4. Another fun accessory is a heart rate monitor. You can pace yourself and keep track of your calories burned and zones.
  5.  Water or lack there of can make or break your training runs.

The Fargo Marathon is also challenging all high schoolers to run the 5K.

Organizers want 500 kids, parents and school faculty from the Fargo, Moorhead and West Fargo high schools and middle schools to sign up for the Friday night 5K!

In return for signing up students to run, your district will earn 50 pairs of shoes for the kids in your elementary schools. Make sure you wear your school colors and, let's get the rivalry going!
