Pet Health: Strange Things Dogs Eat

Posted: Updated:

It is gross, but apparently not unhealthy.

We are wrapping up our pet health week on the valley today with a look at a gross habit.

Dogs often eat things that shouldn't... like poop.

Veterinarians say in some cases, your dog will eat poop by accident. They are curious and will try to eat almost anything.  Dogs explore the world through taste and smell.

Before dogs were domesticated they were scavengers, living off of whatever they could find. Dogs commonly fed on the waste of other animals thousands of years ago.

If your dog has puppies, she might eat puppy poop. This is an instinct to hide their offspring from predators.

Teri-Lee James/Two Rivers Veterinary Hospital: "It actually makes sense. It is an instinct for a lot of dogs. They might want to clean up after themselves or they may be trying to protect themselves from other animals."

D. James at Two Rivers Veterinary Hospital says it may be gross, but it isn't really a health concern.
