Pet Health: Important Advice for Cat Owners

Posted: Updated:

Dogs may have the title of man's best friend, but cat owners will disagree.

Did you know your cat's lifestyle plays into his health care? Indoor and outdoor cats have different risk factors. Two vaccines are recommended for all cats, but a third will be added to outdoor cats.

Vets say while ticks are not a problem for cats -- fleas love them. And, they say even the most loving cat owners often neglect their pet's parasite prevention needs.

Teri-Lee James/Two Rivers Veterinary Hospital: "I think it is a mistake. Even indoor cats can catch mice. Hopefully you don't have mice in your house, but you never know. Also cats can catch crickets and earthworms in the house... And that can spread parasites."

The vets at Two Rivers Veterinary Hospital in West Fargo say they are seeing a lot of over-weight cats. Weight problems can put your cat at risk for other health problems.

Cat owners need to be aware of how much their cat is eating and how many treats he is getting.
Plus, while all cats might not want to go for a walk on a leash... most do need more exercise.
