MN Lake Conditions

Posted: Updated:

Fun fact: Spring 2012 had a number of record early ice-out dates. Now, one year later, we've got record late ones.

Minnesota will hold its fishing opener this weekend, but many lakes across the Valley aren't ready for boats. We drove out to Lakes Country, and here's what we found:

Detroit Lake still has an icy cover, and there was even some snow along the shoreline, although the Minnesota DNR says there are some lakes with edges or bays that have thawed; we saw that at Crystal Lake. Unfortunately, that still means fishermen will be forced to stay on- or close to shore or move to smaller ponds and lakes.

With the official fishing opener coming up on Saturday, fishermen are hoping more ice will melt to allow them to catch walleye, sauger, and northern pikes.

We've posted the photos we collected to the slideshow above this story.

You can also report ice-out dates for your local lakes on the DNR Climate Office Facebook page. They ask that you include date, lake name, and county.

Before the start of the school year some parents may be looking for summer programs for their kids. Through out the valley there are still plenty of ways to get your kids involved in classes and camps.
