Restaurant Report Card

Posted: Updated:

It is Tuesday. That means it is time for our Restaurant Report Card. For the last week we have gone through health inspection reports for area restaurants and found those with the most violations.

This week we are taking a look at three restaurants: Juano's and Fortune House in North Fargo and Super Buffet on 45th Street South.

We begin with the two up north.

Coming off a clean inspection in December, Juano's was hit with two major violations this time around.

The leaking kitchen sink was one. A bucket was placed underneath to catch the water instead of it being fixed. The other one was a bigger issue. Mold was building up on the ice chute of the pop machine.

The owner did not have time to meet with us but did say that both of the problems were fixed right away.

Moving over to Fortune House, we found a couple violations that stuck out.

Some of the pre-cooked foods were not marked with a date, leaving room for speculation of when it was prepared. There were also some repeat issues with cleanliness. Grease debris was building up next to the deep fat fryers, and food debris was accumulating under the fryers.

We tried talking to this owner, but she did not have time for us and hung up the phone.

Our last restaurant's owner was quite the opposite. He did not want to talk on camera but had no problem talking to us.

Super Buffet was dinged for some repeat cleanliness issues. There was buildup of debris on the pop machine, a mess near the dessert bar and some grease buildup on the floor under cooking equipment.

The owner actually showed us all of these areas to prove they have cleaned them.

He said he takes health inspection reports very seriously, so everything was fixed at the time of inspection.

Our segment is not all about confronting restaurants with lots of violations. We also reward those that did not have any.

This week our "Clean Plate Award" went to Duane's House of Pizza on University in Fargo.

On its last three inspections, Duane's has not had any violations. Manager Chad Axvig says he would hate for someone to get sick from their food so cleanliness is a top priority.

He also says it means a lot knowing the restaurant has been around the community for so many years.

"We get a lot of word of mouth business. We kinda have a pretty big following here in the area, and it's nice to kinda have this in addition to that," says Axvig.
