Homeowners Reimbursed for Flood Damages

Posted: Updated:

As flood cleanup begins, homeowners may notice damage to their yards from the installation and removal of flood protection materials. Thankfully, the City of Fargo plans to help with some of the costs to repair damages.

Engineering Specialist Steve Sly says, "Let's face it. We're getting tired of flood fighting, and the added expense to go along with it, so it's just the community spirit to help with some costs."

Fargo leaders approved using the "Yard Damage Restoration Program." It was used from 2009 to 2011 to help with some of the costs accrued with flood fighting.

"They must first submit a claim to their insurance. And once that claim is either paid, the city will reimburse the deductible. Which is option one," says Sly.

Option two is that the city will reimburse some expenses not covered by insurance. It will reimburse 80 percent of expenses for sandbag levees or all expenses for clay levees, both up to $2000.

Some eligible damages include lawn damage, irrigation system repairs, and cracks in the driveway.

Less flood work this year, however, should mean less damages for homeowners to repair.
