John's Jobs: Manager of West Acres

Posted: Updated:

It's a job the requires a lot of walking, oversees over one million square feet of space and can interact with 20,000 people every day. It's the job of facilities manager at the West Acres Shopping Center in Fargo.

However for one day, the Valley Today's, John Trierweiler got a taste of what it's like to manage the largest shopping center between The Twin Cities and Seattle. Doing everything from changing light bulbs to taking down Christmas trees, even cleaning the malls 40 year old fountain.

Chris Heaton, the actual facilities manager at West Acres, says his day can take him anywhere. Even just the simplest of things, like a spill in their food court is addressed right away.

"We never leave the spill to go and get a mop or anything because we don't want to have anybody that's doesn't see it come by and slip." Instead mall staff calls for a mop and waits till they arrive, ensuring the safety of shoppers.

Being the manager of such a large shopping center doesn't just mean you have to take care of what's at the mall, but what's coming to the mall. Overseeing several construction projects, including a new Pink Store, Chili's, and the now complete Recess West play area.

At the end of the day, the mall is still standing and another John's Jobs is a success.
