Spring Checklist for Pet Owners

Posted: Updated:

Not only do we have spring fever, but our pets do too.  Are your animals ready for the change of the seasons?

The Valley Today visited with the vets at Two Rivers Veterinary Hospital in West Fargo to get a top 5 list for what pet owners need to know heading into spring.

(1) Vaccinations.  Summer is busy travel time and most kennels require up-to-date shots.

(2)Parasite protection. It's especially important in the summer when animals are exposed to more things outside.

(3) Be aware of temperatures. You need to make sure your pet has enough water to stay hydrated and give them breaks from the heat.

(4) Have a first aid kit ready for your animals. A lot of things we use can be used for a pet too. A sterile wash and ointment may come in handy.

(5) Ease into physical activity. If your dog has been on the couch all winter... Going on a five mile run on the first nice day of the season could result in injuries.

All this week -- we're focusing on our pets. Tuesday on The Valley Today, we're talking about putting our pets on a diet. Vets say 75 -90% of pets are overweight.
