Cleanup Week Begins: So Do The Pickers

Posted: Updated:

After many people were disappointed with Cleanup Week being moved to the fall, their spirit's went back up when both Fargo and Moorhead changed the dates again. Both are this week!

And even though it starts Monday, many were out Sunday to see what people have put out. Valley News Teams Kristi Larson tells us why both home owners and curb side pickers are happy cleanup week has finally come.

It's hard not to see all the items that have been built up for the city to pick up. After moving clean up week to the fall because of the flood, many factors like a lower crest, sandbags being cleared, and some people complaining, made Cleanup Week move back. It's just in time for spring cleaning.

"We're doing a little bit of remodeling, and it was just an opportunity to get rid of our trash." says Sam Harwood.

Cleanup week is a great opportunity for homeowners to get rid of things they don't need, or that are broken. But for others it means they get the chance to pick up some things that they may need.

Nick Hudson goes picking every year.

"this is probably our third or fourth stop and we're probably half full now." Hudson laughs about his half full van. The excitement of finding things to be re-used or turned into art is why some people go picking.

"It's what you can find, the treasure. I mean yesterday I found a DVD player, took it home and it worked." Hudson says.

Finding things others want to get rid of, and using them yourself. And if you haven't gone down the streets on Cleanup Week before, experienced pickers say it's fun to do.

"try it, you'll have fun doing it, you'll never know what you find." exclaims Hudson.

Both Fargo and Moorhead's cleanup week is this Monday the 6th through Friday the 10th. Fargo's annual electronics recycling event is on Saturday June 1st.
