2nd Street Dike Finished in Fargo

Posted: Updated:

Crews worked round the clock this weekend to finish the final and one of the largest dikes in this 2013 flood fight.

Around 28,000 cubic yards of clay was used from two different Fargo barrow sites to build the 2nd St. dike. Engineers call for construction of the dike when the Red River reaches 30 Ft. or major flood stage which happened last night.

Since last Monday the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the City of Fargo have worked to build 19.44 miles of new levees and dikes, including clay, sandbags and trapbags.

City engineers were able to lower the protection height of clay and sandbag levees from 44ft. to 41 & 42ft. in Fargo after lower crest predictions were released by the National Weather Service.

Many roads now remain closed as several dikes overtake roadways and certain roads are already flooded out. 2nd Street North is now closed from 1st - 5th Ave. and 2nd Street South is Closed from Main Ave. - 4th St. Along with the 1st Ave. North bridge over the Red River.
