Former N.D. Governor Guy Dies at 93

Posted: Updated:

William Guy, one of North Dakota's longest serving governors, died Friday morning at the age of 93. The death was confirmed Friday afternoon by former Sen. Kent Conrad, who had spoken with family members.

Conrad said Guy was a "giant," and all who served in office stood on his shoulders. He told The Associated Press that Guy was a remarkable leader with a vision of developing North Dakota, and he never wavered in pursuit of that.

The Bismarck Tribune reported that Guy helped shape the Democratic-Non Partisan League, which formed in 1956 in a state largely dominated by Republican politics. He said in 2004 that he saw entering politics as an opportunity to change North Dakota's thinking toward national politics.

Hoeven: Gov. Guy 'modernized North Dakota'

North Dakota Sen. John Hoeven says that his earliest memories of public service involve former state Gov. William Guy. Hoeven says the Democrat "modernized North Dakota and brought us into the 20th Century." Guy called it a "transformative era."

Guy died Friday at age 93. He'd served as governor from 1961-1973.

Hoeven says that Guy was one of the first people to recognize the state's potential when it came to energy, especially coal and oil.

Says Hoeven, "He also knew the tremendous importance of agriculture to our economy, and was one of the first to identify the potential of value-added agriculture, like sugar beet refining, to get the most out of our largest industry."

Hoeven says North Dakotans owe Guy a debt of gratitude.

Heitkamp saddened by former governor's death

North Dakota Sen. Heidi Heitkamp is among the state's politicians mourning the death of former Gov. William Guy. Heitkamp issued a statement from her verified Twitter account Friday, saying she was saddened by the news.

Says Heitkamp, "He worked tirelessly to improve the lives of North Dakotans."

Former Sen. Kent Conrad confirmed to The Associated Press that Guy died Friday at age 93. Conrad tells the AP that Guy was a remarkable leader with vision.

The Democrat served as governor for more than a decade, beginning in 1961.
