Rising River could close some major roads

Posted: Updated:

Things are changing along the Red River and walker Maurice DeGrugillier sees it first hand.

"It's interesting how quick it is coming," says DeGrugillier.

His walk that usually takes him across Elm Street in North Fargo will turn into a swim if he doesn't find another path.

"This roads going to be under," says DeGrugillier.

Elm Street at 14th and 15th avenue north closes once the river hits 18 feet.

And if it hits 25, 9th avenue north near Mickelson Field will be blocked off.

"This weekend there will be a lot of road closures," says Nathan Boerboon, Fargo Engineer.

In Moorhead, the 3rd street underpass is normally the first road to go underwater and if the river hits 22 feet, it will be closed.

The 1st avenue north underpass in Moorhead closes at 31 feet.

And once the rising river hits 28 feet, the 15th avenue north toll bridge will be closed.

"It's coming up good," says DeGrugillier.

For DeGrugillier, he hopes the closures don't last long, for the sake of not just walkers but traffic in the area.

"There's a lot of mallards that don't mind this," says DeGrugillier.
