E.G.F. Flood Wall Goes Up As Red Begins Dramatic Rise

Posted: Updated:

The ice isn't out yet, but that isn't slowing down a dramatic rise of the Red River in the northern valley.

In real time… to the human eye it seems to happen at a snail's pace. However, at times the Red River at Grand Forks has been rising more than one-foot an hour.  That has spurred East Grand Forks into action. City crews are installing the flood wall downtown. It a job expected to be wrapped up this weekend.

Mayor Lynn Stauss says, while it's a bit of an inconvenience, it's a requirement.

Lynn Stauss, EGF Mayor: "If you didn't do it and it flooded over it, you'd look pretty bad. But, the federal government requires that we do this."

The current forecast remains well below the Greater Grand Forks flood protection system of 60-feet. And since business owners don't have to worry about high water, some are taking advantage of it.

Jane Moss, Boardwalk Bar & Grill: "We are opening our deck tonight and doing a flood watch.  We are staying high and dry up here, so we want people to come out and have a few drinks and watch the water rise."

The actual inconvenience of putting up the flood wall is handled by this city crew. And year after year, it's left everyone proclaiming the joys of permanent flood protection.

Lynn Stauss, EGF Mayor: "We're very fortunate to have it… Fargo-Moorhead of course, they're very concerned and look at all the sandbags they did this year, because they just didn't know how high it was going to get."

…Major expense, time, money and worry that's now avoided here… with permanent flood

It's expected the National Weather Service will come out with their actual crest forecast for Grand Forks within the next couple of days.
