No jail time for suspect in human trafficking case

Posted: Updated:

A woman once facing a possible life prison sentence for pimping a 17-year-old girl in Grand Forks has been given two years of probation and 70 hours of community service on a lesser charge.

Amanda Stewart, 22, tearfully thanked Judge Sonja Clapp for the deal that even the prosecutor called unusual.

Stewart and two men were charged last August with felony human trafficking of an underage girl. They all three eventually pleaded guilty to lesser charges.

Stewart's deal called for a yearlong sentence, but prosecutor Jason McCarthy ended up recommending no jail time. He told the judge he made the decision after learning more about Stewart's childhood, which her attorney said had left her ill-equipped to handle life on her own.
