2013 Earth/Sandbag levee Fact Sheet

A total of 40.34 miles of levees will be used in the 2013 flood

  • 19.44 miles will be built in 2013 (earth, sandbag, WIPP,
    Trap Bag, alternative, etc)
  • 20.90 miles of permanent levees are already in place
  • Refer to the levee/sandbag location map on the flood website

Earth Levees

  • Earth levees in Fargo are being built to 44 feet
  • Earth levees are being built high right away because it's difficult to add height later
  • All Corps earth levees will have to be removed after the flood (approx 7.33 miles)
  • Earth levees built by the City are being built with the intention of keeping them permanently
  • 150,000 cubic yards of clay or approx. 12,500 dump truck loads (12 yards per dump truck) will be used to build earth levees in 2013
  • Borrow pits: 64th Avenue Borrow Pit (used in 2010 & 2011), Stockpile at old landfill, and airport land.


Sandbag Levees

  • Sandbag levees are being built to 43 feet.
  • We will use approx. 7,500 tons of sand to fill ½ million sandbags (30lbs per bag)
