Sandbag Convoys Underway in Fargo

Posted: Updated:

The City of Fargo has begun a three-day push to scramble semi trucks loaded with sandbag pallets to flood-prone neighborhoods around town. Police are escorting four trucks at a time to and from locations, and are asking drivers to yield to these fast-moving vehicles.

From the City of Fargo:

The Fargo Police Department is seeking public assistance and awareness as the movement of flood fighting equipment, trucks and sandbag convoys begins. Effective Tuesday, April 23 at 7 a.m. and continuing through the evening of Thursday, April 25, the Fargo Police Department will be escorting sandbag delivery trucks to different drop-off points throughout the city. The police will be using lights and sirens with a lead car and a trail car to escort semi-tractor trailers in groups of 4 to sandbag drop-off points and then back to the loading points.  Police will attempt to escort 526 semi-loads through the city during a three day period.  Drivers are asked to yield the right of way to these escorted convoys so they can efficiently and effectively deliver sandbags and equipment in a timely manner.

Police also ask drivers not to park on streets and avenues where flood protection work is in progress. Quick and clear access is needed for large equipment so it can move into and through those areas. Vehicles that are parked on the street and hindering equipment access may be towed.  During an emergency situation, there may not be time to find vehicle owners and ask them to move their vehicles. Residents should be mindful of where they park.
