Fargo Flood Fight Kicks Into High Gear

Starting today the City of Fargo will begin construction of more than 19 miles of levee protection to a level of 43 feet.

A total of 40.34 miles of levees will be used in the 2013 flood fight, the city already has 20.90 miles of permanent levees in place, but needs to build 19.44 miles.

People driving in and around Fargo will notice trucks hauling clay and sand to construction sites and are reminded to give them self's extra time and pay closer attention to their surroundings.

Drivers will also notice National Guard solider's manning traffic control points throughout the city as the flood fight ramps up. Those solider's will arrive in town today and begin preparing later this afternoon. They'll start manning those traffic control points starting at 6:30 AM, Tuesday.

Several streets are now closed including:

Sunday, April 21, starting at noon

  1. University Drive will be closed between 32nd Ave. N. and 40th Ave. N. (Co. Rd. 20). The road will be open to local traffic for access into the Riviera Heights mobile home park off University Drive.
  2. 36th Ave. N. will be closed between University Drive and 10th St. N. The road will be open to local traffic for access to homes on 36th Ave. N. The closure is for the hauling of material for clay levee construction.
  3. On University Drive, south of 64th Ave. S., there will be heavy truck activity in the area due to the hauling of dirt material for clay levee construction. Speed will be reduced to 25 mph and roads may be slippery due to muddy conditions. Slow down and use caution when driving through this area.
  4. North bound traffic will be reduced to one lane on 45th St. between 7th Ave. N. and 12th Ave. N. for the hauling of dirt material for clay levee construction. There will be heavy truck activity in the area. Speed will be reduced to 25 mph and roads may be slippery due to muddy conditions. Slow down and use caution when driving through this area.
  5. Oak St. N. will be closed between 8th Ave. N. and 11th Ave. N. The road will be closed for the construction of a clay levee on the roadway.
  6. Lindenwood Dr. S. will be closed between 17th Ave. S. and 3rd St. S. The road will be closed for the construction of a clay levee on the roadway.
  7. On-street parking will be restricted in the Oak Grove area for sandbag delivery and placement.

 Monday, April 22

  1. 5th St. S. will be closed between 17th Ave. S. & 24th Ave. S. starting at 8:30 a.m. The road will closed be for the construction of a Trap Bag levee along 5th St. S.
  2. On-street parking will be restricted on Elm Circle North and it will be converted into a one-way street for sandbag delivery. All traffic control will be in place by 10 a.m.
  3. On-street parking will be restricted on Woodcrest Dr. due to sandbag delivery and placement. All traffic control will be in place by 10 a.m.
  4. There will be on-street parking restrictions for 42nd Ave. N. and 41st Ave. N., east of 10th St. N., for sandbag delivery and placement. The entire Riverwood area will be closed to through traffic, only local neighborhood access will be available. All traffic control will be in place by 10 a.m.
  5. On-street parking will be restricted on South River Dr., 3rd St. S., and Linden Ave. S. in the Belmont Park area due to sandbag delivery and placement. All traffic control will be in place by 10 a.m.
